When we arrived at the split, it’s not signed, but we took off to the right to complete a loop. I didn’t even see a trail to where you could go take photos of the lower, upper falls.Īfter taking a few photos, we headed back out. You can get some different shots looking up at the falls. But, that trail was even more challenging, so we chose just to take photos where you come out from the main trail. I saw that there was a trail to the right of the falls and people were getting to the top. The waterfall was as I had remembered it from a few years ago. The trail gets a little wet and slippery just before you arrive at the falls. The trail becomes rooty, rocky, and a little steep in spots. There was a spot where you could pretty much just walk across the creek without getting your shoes too wet. It ends up that when we were heading back, that we really didn’t have to rock hop the bigger creek crossing. You go through a portion of the trail where probably about 1 to 2/10 of a mile, you are dodging lots of mud. So, we head off to the right at the split and head towards Upper Falls. Once you take off to the upper falls, it’s pretty much not maintained. The trail, up until you get to the split where you take off to the right to Upper Falls, is maintained. There are boardwalks built along the trail. The trail ends up leveling out for a while. The trail starts out a tad rough and they have wooden fencing along the trail. The sign will direct you to the left to head to the falls and “Graveyard Fields”. When you take the steps down by the new pit toilet area and eventually cross the river on the boardwalk, you will come to the upper / lower falls split. If you complete the loop, it ends up being approximately 3.2 miles round trip. We had lunch in the car and then got out and took some photos. Right before you get to Graveyard Fields (if you’re coming from Asheville), there is a long pulloff on the right that has some pretty incredible views. We decided that it wouldn’t be comfortable sitting out at a picnic table. It was in the 40’s and windy on the parkway. On our way to Graveyard Fields, we were looking for a place to have our little picnic lunch. On that previous trip, we only went to Lower Falls because prior to coming to Graveyard Fields, we had stopped at Skinny Dips Falls. We were up at Graveyard Fields back in July. I’ll go back and play catch up later on our end of summer walks / hikes. I’m skipping ahead because by golly I want to post my fall pictures in the fall instead of around Thanksgiving or Christmas. The first weekend of this month was the first weekend of getting out to enjoy the fall / changing of the leaves. I’m about 2 months behind on posting our walks / hikes. Okay, I’m doing something here that is so unlike me.
